Manchester United mark 50th anniversary of Munich air disaster
wednesday the 6th february 1958 was one of the darkest days in the history of football. exactly fifty years on, manchester united are marking the munich air disaster with a series of special tributes. the clock outside old trafford recalls the exact time an aeroplane carrying united's famous 'busby babes' squad careered off a slush covered runway in germany. twenty-three passengers, including eight players, were killed. the stadium's new 'munich tunnel' will now provide a permanent memorial to the tragedy which occurred after united had drawn 3-3 with red star belgrade in the european cup in the former yugoslavia. current red devils' director and former england star sir bobby charlton was among the survivors. soundbite (english) "when the accident happened, it was demoralising for everyone. everybody suffered - the families, the fans, the players. it was so unbelievable, you know." supercaption: sir bobby charlton, munich air crash survivor for the 50th anniversary, united are holding a remembrance service at old trafford. phil townsend is the club's director of communications. soundbite (english) "i think if you speak to people of my father's generation, this was very much their kennedy moment.... everyone in manchester and the surrounding area knows - and everyone in football knows - where they were when they heard the news about the air crash." supercaption: phil townsend, manchester united director of communications flowers have been laid outside the ground, meanwhile local newspaper the manchester evening news has produced a 48-page commemorative supplement. soundbite (english) "they were such young people, and i was one of them in a way. i was one of them, i was really one of them, playing football with wilf mcguinness and all this kind of thing." supercaption: anthony massey, friend of munich victim many england stars, including former manchester city goalkeeper frank swift, were among the deceased. the national side will pay tribute with a minute's silence before their friendly match against switzerland.
